Free things to do in Boca Raton

A nature center with no admission charge, a free science museum for children, a monthly free day at the history museum, and the one cost almost nobody plans for: parking at the beach.

Boca Raton has a reputation for being expensive, and a surprising amount of it costs nothing. The catch is rarely the door. It is the parking lot, and occasionally the one paid ride inside an otherwise free park.

Everything below was checked on the operator's own page in October 2026. Free admission is a policy, and policies change; each one links to the page that would say so first.

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center

On A1A at the north end of Red Reef Park, and the city says plainly that general admission carries no charge — the center is paid for by city and Beach and Park District taxpayers, and takes donations. As of October 2026 the nature center and aquariums open Tuesday to Sunday 9am to 4pm and Monday afternoons from noon; the boardwalk, trails and observation tower are open every day from 7am until sunset.

Two rules worth knowing before you go. The small lot on site is free but is for nature center visitors only — you cannot use it for the beach. And there are no pets anywhere on the property.

Sugar Sand Park and the Explorium

Sugar Sand Park, at 300 South Military Trail, holds the Children's Science Explorium, which the city runs as a free hands-on science center for children aged 5 to 12 with their grown-ups. As of October 2026 it is open weekdays 9am to 6pm and weekends and holidays 10am to 5pm.

Inside the free admission there is more free on top: challenge sheets, a bug-bingo game, an outdoor science garden open during park hours, and a monthly weekend demonstration. On Saturday mornings the staff read science-themed picture books, and the first Saturday of each month opens early in a sensory-friendly setting with the sound and lighting turned down.

The exception is the carousel, next to the playground, which charges a small fare per ride and is closed on Mondays. The city's carousel page has the current price.

Daggerwing Nature Center

Out west in the county's Burt Aaronson South County Regional Park — unincorporated Palm Beach County rather than the city. The boardwalk is open daily from sunrise to sunset; as of October 2026 the exhibit hall, with live animals, opens Wednesday to Friday afternoons and Saturdays. Leave the bike and the dog at home: neither is allowed, and nor is running on the boardwalk.

StoryWalks

The city library pins a children's picture book, a page at a time, along a walking route — and changes the book through the year. There are three: in Patch Reef Park, at the Serenoa Glade Preserve in George Snow Park, and in the Pondhawk Natural Area next to the Spanish River Library. Nothing to book and nothing to pay.

Free on certain days

  • The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum, in Historic Town Hall at 71 North Federal Highway, is free on the first Saturday of every month. As of October 2026 it is open Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, with free parking behind the building. FAU students get in free with an Owl Card.
  • The Boca Raton Museum of Art, in Mizner Park, charges adults but lets in children under 15 and high school students free. The museum says parking in Mizner Park's garages is free.

Free with a library card

If you live in the city, the Boca Raton Public Library card is free, and the card is what unlocks the e-books, streaming and classes. Which card you can get depends on where you live; the library-card guide sorts it out.

The one that is not free: beach parking

The beaches are missing from the list above because of the car. Parking at one of the three city beach parks costs money: you need an annual permit or the daily rate at the gatehouse, and since 1 October 2026 the gatehouses take cards and phone payments only, not cash. Gumbo Limbo's free lot cannot be used for the beach. The beaches guide has the rules.

What else is on

The events calendar carries what the city and the CRA publish, and plenty of it is free — this weekend is a good place to start. For a wider list of places, paid and free, see things to do in Boca Raton.

Revision history

October 2026 — First published.

We record when a guide was published and when it was last revised. We do not yet record what changed, so this is a dating record rather than a changelog.

How guides are written

Written and checked by a person, and carrying the month they were published and the month they were last revised. Where a rule or a fee applies we link the official source rather than quoting a number that will go stale.

Something out of date?

A fee that has changed, a link that has moved, an answer that is no longer right — tell us and we will check it and say we did.
